Hair Jewelry for Formal Updos

By Doris Möller

Now, in particular formal updo hairstyles, can be worn with hair jewelry and hair accessories because putting accessories in your hair is so “in” right now. You can see stores full of beautiful and versatile hair objects to put in your hair.

Adding sparkly objects such as diamond barrettes to complement your hair style – even if they are not real – or flowers, headbands, barrettes and combs is so fashionable. Wear a barrette with Swarovski crystals in your formal updo and you will be the center of attention. They just add more fun and excitement to your hair and your looks. Going out to an evening formal occasion and wearing a barrette that sparkles in your dark, shiny hair can make you look so elegant and chic. It will emphasize your hair style and be practical for you at the same time because it can help to hold your hair back or up like a velvet headband or barrette and add that certain “je ne sais quoi”.

Tips for updos and how to use hair accessories

  • To make a nice curl for your up do: Take a bobby pin and slide the end of the curl in between the booby pin, twist it around –which will then make a curl into this section and then slide it in the hair on your scalp securely.

  •

  • When putting your hair up: To put a big curl into long hair on the top of your head to give height, hold a section of hair up on the top of your head and knot it. Then, holding it down, put a bobby pin through the knot to secure it to your head.

  •

  • To make sure a hairpin does not fall out: Bend one section of the hairpin. This will prevent it from sliding out.

  •

  • Another method to prevent a hairpin from falling out: Before putting the hairpin into the hair move it first a bit up on the scalp and then push it down into place. This little move will gather more hair and therefore secure it better.

  •

  • To make a tiara stay on your head: Make a thin braid on each side where you want to place the tiara on top of your head and back comb the ends of the thin braids to prevent the braids from getting undone and place each one flat on the scalp and hold it down with a bobby pin. Now secure the tiara at each end on top of the braid with bobby pins.

  •

  • Barrettes: Best used for straight hair, chin length and longer hair.

  • A good spot to wear a barrette: On the side of your head where the eyebrow ends.

  •

  • Combs are best used in thick, curly hair

  • The best way to place a comb into your hair: Let’s say you want to put in a comb on the side of your head. Gently hold up the section of hair in place and with one hand hold the comb with teeth slightly pointed back into the hair. Now move the comb forward and slide it all the way down into the hair. This backward and then forward move makes the comb stay more secure and prevents it from falling out. This method is especially useful when you need to put on a wedding veil.
