Blush make up tips

 By Doris Möller

When you go to that special party looking fabulous with your formal updo you will of course also have put on some make up. Especially for an evening event with artificial lighting make up is very important. This article will show you a few tricks and give you a few tips on applying blush make up.

Rule number one when applying blush: Apply blush according to the shape of your face. Is your face round, long, oval, square? Here is an illustration that will show you how to best apply blush. Apply it in the right area of your cheeks and it will make you look beautiful.

First you have to get the right type of face make up powder brush. Use one that is especially made for applying blush and choose one that is of high quality. Usually that means a brush made of sable hair. Sable make up brushes are the best and also last forever.

Here is the general idea to perfect the shape of your face by contouring it the right way with blush make up. If your face is round you can make it thinner depending on where on your cheek you place the blush. With this method you can if you have a long face widen it or lengthen a round face. An oval face is considered the ideal shape because it is perfectly symmetrical and it is the shape you try to achieve if your face is other than oval.

Rule number two when applying blush: Use only a blush make up color that goes with your color type. Match it to your color type. This is the second secret how your blush make up can make you look gorgeous.

We all fall into four different color types. It was Carol Jackson who in her book Color Me Beautiful made us all aware that we are born either a cool color type or a warm color type. Originally “the seasonal color theory?was developed by the artist and colorist Johannes Itten in the mid 1900’s. He was a member of the famous Bauhaus school in Germany and is the author of the book “The Art of Color?

There is the soft cool color type called “Summer?and a strong cool color type called “Winter?and then there is the soft warm “Spring?and strong warm “Autumn?color type.

One easy way to determine to which color type you belong is to look at your natural hair color. If your natural hair color has a reddish warm tone you are an “Autumn?or strong warm and if it is light gold blond, medium gold blond, you are a “Spring?or soft warm color type. Very often warm color types have freckles, even if they are not very visible.

People with black ?to light brown hair are called “Winter??strong cool color types and the dirty-mousy blond colors are “Summer?or soft cool color types.

As you might have noticed a person’s natural hair color synchronizes with their skin tone and eye color and because this is the case it is best to therefore synchronize your make up accordingly.

So then this is your guideline when choosing a blush make up color:

  • Strong cool color type (Winter): Blush with a blue-pink undertone.
  • Soft cool color type (Summer): Blush with a pink undertone ?must not be a dark color. Both red colors are “cool?colors. Here are a few of examples.

  • Strong warm color type (Autumn): Blush with a terra cotta undertone.
  • Soft warm color type (Spring): Blush with a peachy undertone. Both red colors are “warm?colors.

  • For a 'healthy' glow, tap blush on the apples of your cheeks when you smile. Your guideline? Never apply blush below line of the bottom of your nose: you'll look cold.

  • For correct amount of blush every time, note where you hit with your blush brush first. That's where the color will be the strongest and then blend out from there.

  • Keep your cream blush on longer by applying a light coat of Vaseline or for those with oily skin, a moisturizer on first. You'll find your cream blush lasts hours longer.

  • Create an optical illusion with your blush by bringing attention to your eyes. By applying color directly 'under' your eye on the apples of your cheeks, you will draw attention to your eyes.

  • Use your blush to focus on your hairstyle. This optical illusion is great for showing off that beautiful hairstyle, or for the bride at the her wedding. Smile, and apply blush on the apples of your cheeks, and then blend straight back towards the top of your ear. By 'blending' backwards, you bring the focus of the line going straight back to, you guessed it; your hairstyle.

  • Shorten a long face with your blush placement. Apply blush close to the apples of your cheeks, and avoid blending out beyond that point. By keeping the focus of the color right underneath your eye, you give the illusion of a smaller face and you create a 'line' that 'divides' the face in half."

  • Want your blush to last longer? Use lipstick or a chubby lip pencil in a wine or bronze shade on your cheeks. Blend and then apply a touch of your colored powdered blush on top. You'll find that your color will last hours longer. Why? The wax of the pencil has more staying power than powder alone.

  • I'm a big fan of blush stains, but even I feel a few hours wear isn't enough. Call it the professional in me but sometimes I just want my blush to last all day long. Here's a quick trick that I found out accidentally....I applied one morning my 'blush' colored powder blush and an hour later, touched up with my liquid stain on top. It's a little tricky to blend because the powder blush underneath makes the stain dry quicker, but I noticed that the stain color stayed on for hours.....and I do mean hours.About 5-6 hours later when I checked. it was still on.

  • Widen your face to create cheekbones. Apply a contouring color. Try a deeper, warmer shade of your skin tone for color. Apply in the hollows of your cheekbones. Then apply right in the indentation of your temple. By adding contour here as well, you create the illusion of a stronger cheekbone by going in (temple), out (cheekbone) and then in again (underneath the cheekbone).

  • Want to create a warm golden shimmer? Try a soft gold shimmer eye shadow. Apply lightly with a large fluffy blush brush to spot apply on tops of cheekbones, over eyeshadow, on lips for a day to night look. Or mix into body or face lotion for a subtle shimmer. Sexy.
