How to best comb/brush your long hair

Here are a couple of very useful hints for combing and brushing your long hair.

1. After shampooing your hair (of course you will have used a conditioner) use a wide toothed comb to comb and untangle your hair. Most people start combing their hair at the front of their head. That is why they get stuck and have to pull their hair unnecessarily.

But there is an easier and better way to comb out your wet hair. Start at the ends first. The trick is to start at the ends and not near the scalp. Because the ends of your hair are the oldest part of your hair they are porous and much more tangled and are therefore harder to comb through. So the best and least painful strategy is to start combing your hair from the end.

Only work with one section of your hair at a time and pin up the rest. Comb through the ends and then it will be easy to comb through the rest of the hair .
2. The second hint concerns dry long hair. If you want to brush your long hair without any discomfort and without pulling your hair, I found that using a paddle brush like the one you see here is the best type of brush to use with long hair. This type of brush goes smoothly through your hair and feels so nice on your scalp.

If you like to brush your hair really well use this type of brush. Because of its rubber cushion, it also takes away any static. You can use it for any kind of hair but I think it is the most useful brush for long hair.

You probably can get this brush in most drug stores and some beauty salons.

Want to have a different look?

When you want to look different or feel more glamorous put your hair up. (If your hair is long). You will notice how your face looks more open. It shows your eyes more and I think when you look at these beautiful women’s faces wearing their hair up it makes them even more beautiful.

Funny thing is updos look like short hair and I always thought that short hair looked the most flattering on most women. This is just an observation of mine after styling hair for a long time.

Long Hair and Split Ends

If you have long hair, you are probably  worried that you have split ends. We could make it sound even more serious by referring to it by its medical name “trichoptilosis”. People ascribe different reasons to how you  get split ends. For example, backbrushing or backcombing, the sun, the wind, hair coloring and hair perming, shampooing and drying your hair, hard water and  some hairstyling products.

I even have clients with short hair asking me “do I have any split ends?”

I am writing this article to alleviate your fears about split ends and your worry that you might end up with no hair. Actually you will see that there is really nothing to worry about. The worst thing that could happen is that the ends of your hair are not blunt but have a slightly uneven length, which is not a bad thing at all and makes the periphery of your hair look more natural. So, you see, nothing terrible is happening to your hair.

Now let’s just consider for a moment what split ends really are and what causes this condition. Split ends occur in long hair. Hair is like a fiber and once it has been washed, dried, styled, colored and mayby permed over a long (two and a half years) period of time it starts to wear out at the ends.

If you haven’t cut your hair for two years or more it tends to tangle at the ends, which can also be described as “porous”. The cuticle starts to stick out (you can see this under a microscope) which causes  the hair to tangle easily, it is hard to comb through. Because of the wear and tear the hair starts to split, maybe a millimeter or two.

You will see hair conditioners that claim to to work for split ends, but this unfortuanetly is an illusion. However, a conditioner does wonders to detangle your hair. The best thing to do if you are concerned about split ends is  to cut your hair about half an inch.

Oh yes, and by the way, you probably have figured it out by now, short hair cannot have split ends. It’s simply not old enough.

Is this “popular” hair color right for you?

So, what are the popular hair colors these days? You may have noticed them. They are everywhere. One color I would describe as a kind of brassy, honey tone and the other is a bleached blonde. Many well-known movie stars and famous people’s hair is colored in these colors and you may assume that you too should color your hair in these tones especially since you think it would be great for a special occasion.

Unfortuanetly there are a couple of things amiss with these hair colors.

1. Years ago any professional hair colorist would have considered a “brassy” tone an unfinished hair color and a bleached blonde would have been the same because after hair is bleached it has an unnatural yellow tone which must be neutralized in order to make it look like a natural very light blonde or platinum blonde.

2. Both of these popular hair colors have a warm tone, though an unatural one, and should best not be worn by anyone who is a cool color type because it simply won’t suit them.

I don’t know if there is anything more important that you can do in order to look fabulous than having a hair color that totally suits you. That is why you have to make sure that when you color your hair that it’s the right tone and shade.

Can you look as glamorous in short hair as in long hair for your special occasion?

Usually you equate looking glamorous with long hair especially when you have to attend a special party. But have you ever noticed when women with long hair wear their hair up they now look like they have short hair. The up-do actually gives the impression of short hair and it now looks more glamorous and elegant than long hair.

Looks like short hair

Most women do look much better in short hair but when it’s time to go out to parties they think that they are at a disadvantage because their hair is short. Nothing could be further from the truth. Don’t worry. If  you have short hair all you need is to know how to make your hairstyle look glamorous

First, your hairstyle has to suit you. By that I mean a style that complements and balances your features and even your body type. Another important thing is – your hair color – . Your hair color has to be right for you. It is an important part of making you beautiful.

Also you can add – in order to dress up your short hair style – some gold color gel to give yourself temporary highlights or even clip on a piece of a different hair color to make your hair style stand out.

Here are a few examples:

The Most Flattering Hairstyle – When You Are Short

So, you are planning to go to a fancy party? And you are going to take special care to make sure you are really going to look fabulous.

Tell me, what do you think is more important, your outfit or your hairstyle? Well, everybody knows that if your hair doesn’t look good your outfit won’t look great either. So, since your hairstyle is the most important part let’s make sure you choose a hairstyle that is the most flattering.

First, answer this question: How tall are you. Ask yourself, am I short, of average height or tall?

Let’s assume that you are short. Here is one simple rule. The idea is not to appear shorter than you really are. And you will be doing exactly that if you are wearing your long hair down. Long hair kind of pulls you down.

Have a look at the shortest member of the Dixie Chicks. Even though her hairstyle is beautiful it is not the most advantages for her. Have a look what she looks like in

short hair. Interesting, isn’t it?
